THE HANGING GARDEN OF RAY MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!!!!

This structure was made to create a more interesting way to grow plants. It is a large rectangular structure that hangs a special type of plastic bag by copper wires. The bags have 8 cuts in the front of them. The bags are filled with vermiculite.  We took basil plants at about an inch tall. Then we push them into the cuts in front of the bags. This is a fun way to grow plants indoors.

Mexico NY Field Trip

On Monday, April 7th 2014, the Ray Techponics Club went to go visit Mexico High School. We went to go visit Mexico, NY because they have a Hydroponic/Aquaponic system too! Their system is awesome! They are growing many things including corn and strawberries! They are also doing something called Aeroponics! Aeroponics is a kind of way to grow things. The plants do not grow in soil and they're roots are in mid-air. They're roots are misted all the time to help them grow. They are currently holding 20 tilapia. They are helping to bring back the Atlantic Salmon from extinction. One interesting fact about Mexico High School is that they hold a painting that is only in 2 places in the world. The White House and Mexico High School. Overall, it was a great trip and we look forward to many new opportunities to learn more about our hobby.

Mr. Vinette's Fun Way to do Hydroponics at Home!!!!

To make this system you take an ordinary water bottle and cut it in half. Then you take a small red solo cup and cut a slit in the bottom. then you take a foot of a cotton rag. You put the piece of the rag through the bottom of the cup, hanging about 3 inches out of the bottom of the cup. Then you put about 2 inches of water in the bottom half of the bottle. then you take the cup and put it in the bottom half of the water bottle. then you put vermiculite in the cup and take a circle of paper towel and put it on top of the vermiculite and get it a little wet. then you finally put the seed of you liking on the paper towel and give it sun.

West Genesee teachers visit

On Feb. 13th, we showed our hydro- and aqua- ponics systems to two teachers from the West Genesee schools. We pointed out our Bonzai wheel and our Fish tank along with our main system. We ended the show with a movie and sent the teachers away with a bag of cilantro each.

New ways!

Micro Greens are certain vegetables that are harvested at a young age, usually at the fist leaf growth stage. The greens are used for gourmet salads, garnishes, or sprinkled over entrees. They can come as different flavors such as spicy and mild. They can also come in different colors. We were using rock wool to grow micro greens, but it was rather expensive so we came up with an idea to grow them with a paper towel. It has been working very well as you can see in the picture. These micro greens are a great way to spice up your life in a healthy way!
Unfortunately, this method ended up not working for us, but it was a good try!
